The examination of nuclear waste packages can be carried out using a number of non-destructive radiometric investigative methods. To improve the results from combined digital radiography with computerized tomography, a new data acquisition programme was developed which provides improved measuring times, correct geometrical projection and intensity calibration. The application of a new detector to high-energy computed tomography resulted in an improved dynamic range and fast read-out times. The application of non-destructive tomographic examination of vitrified waste packages to assess the internal surface area resulting from crack formation has been compared with conventional leach testing. Based on the results of applying non-destructive interrogation, a strategy for the representative sampling of low-level radioactive waste has been developed.
