A considerable amount of development work is being carried out to provide a code of practice for the fire engineering design of structural steelwork. The work has concentrated on the parent properties of the structural steelwork and more recently on the behaviour of bolts and the response of bolted connections. However, structural steel design codes are still based upon the ambient temperature properties of welded connections. As future codes for design at the fire limit state will require detailed information on the behaviour of welds at elevated temperatures a programme of work was carried out:

- To provide elevated temperature data on the behaviour of welded hot rolled structural steels;
- To establish whether new aspects of weld design should be applied at the fire limit state;
- To determine the residual strength properties of welded connections after a fire to formulate guidance for reinstatement or repair of damaged structures. es.
