This report relates to the work that has been carried out on the safe demonstration of concrete removal and explosive cutting techniques developed under preceding EC programmes, on the full-scale biological shield structure of the partly decommissioned LIDO enriched uranium thermal swimming pool reactor based at Harwell, United Kingdom. The large-scale demonstration of mechanical scabbling, microwave scabbling, explosive concrete removal technique, explosive cutting of steel tubes and plates and explosive concrete removal adjacent to cast-in steel parts, is described. The effectiveness of each technique was assessed on defined sections of the biological shield walls and the results presented with respect to the safety, regulatory and commercial aspects. An aerosol characterization of each assessed technique is part of the report, as well as a description of the structure monitoring and the blast wave effect of the explosive trials.
