The main objective of the European concerted Action COST 509 Corrosion and Protection of Metals in contact with concrete was to achieve a consensus view on the experimental approaches to find effective solutions to the corrosion of metals in concrete. The aims were to reduce the costly repair and maintenance of concrete structures where metals within or in contact with the concrete have deteriorated, to increase awareness in the corrosion aspects and to achieve an unified approach for the development of economical and technical acceptable solutions. This report is an evaluation of the results of research carried out and of their real impact in terms of obtained benefits. Also some recommendations for future work and to improve the COST procedures are reported, taking into consideration suggestions and opinions of the national delegates to the management committee of the Action.
