This project had the aim of re-examining the operating procedures in the basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS) process and establishing procedures to minimize the iron losses from the vessel. The objectives were:

- To assess the importance of a slag forming agent on the iron yield losses to the waste gas cleaning system;
- To assess the importance of oxygen nozzle design, oxygen flow rate, the nozzle separation distance from the liquid and the influence of bottom gas stirring on slag formation and the yield losses;
- To assess the importance of retained steel slag, the flux materials and the timing of their addition to the vessel, on iron yield losses;
- To assess the influence of vessel age on the iron yield losses.

The research was in three parts. Part one involved laboratory scale modelling studies followed by part two, the pilot plant trials, before part three employed the best results from this work in the full-scale plant trials. rials.
