Fracture mechanics has been widely used for stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement studies, particularly in the case of high strength steels. The objective of the present work was to apply the fracture mechanic concepts developed for ductile materials to the case of hydrogen charged materials. The study has been performed on several steels that can be used in hydrogenating environment. In parallel to fracture mechanics tests, the influence of hydrogen on the ductility has been studied from tensile test performed on hydrogen precharged specimens. Hydrogen diffusivity and trapping characteristics of the steels have also been studied. Several hydrogen charging conditions, representative of services conditions have been used.
