From a general point of view, a thermomechanical approach to the improvement of the performance of refractory coverings has become absolutely necessary, especially for steel ladles. The methodology developed in the course of this study has given encouraging results, and an industrial application has already been put into place, notably at Sollac Florange. Nevertheless, certain limitations have been identified in this approach:

- A full knowledge of the thermomechanical characteristics of refractory products and of the laws of behaviour which do not allow inelastic phenomena to be fully taken into account;
- Incomplete knowledge of the behaviour of interfaces between bricks or joints (molten grout, mass to be filled).
