The publication contains the papers presented at the Working Group Meeting of COST 98 Action entitled Immuno-modulating and Antitumour Effects of Lectins of Mistletoe and Kidney Bean held from 7-10 November 1996, at the University of Witten/Herdecke (DE). The main topics of the Workshop were:

- Comparison of the immuno-modulating properties of mistletoe and other RIP II ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) II and kidney bean lectin (PHA);
- Cytotoxic activities of RIP I and RIP II lectins;
- Effects of orally administered mistletoe lectins (MLs) and PHA;
- Cellular glycoconjugate targets/receptors for MLs and PHA;
- Recombinant ML-1: Subunit structure and biological activity;
- Histology and immuno-histology of the effects of MLs and PHA on tumour, gut and other tissues;
- Test systems for studies of uptake, toxicity and immuno-modulation by lectins in the gut;
- Molecular modelling of RIP II lectins and their carbohydrate receptors;
- Multipotent biological activities of lectins used as food and/or drugs;
- Biomedical aspects of screening plant lectins for nutritional and therapeutical uses.
