In the present work plates and sections of conventional structural steel grades have been examined to study the relationships between product type, strength, toughness, thickness and temperature. Charpy, crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and wide plate test methods have been employed together with fracture mechanics assessments using BSPD6493 Level 2 assessment, CTOD design curve and crack driving force approach. The principal aim of the project is the definition of the relationship between the large scale structural behaviour of plates and sections and mall scale toughness characterization tests in order to assess realistic design code specification limits.
