A fine grained microstructure and homogeneous mechanical behaviour was produced in butt welded joints with multi-layer technique and low heat input. The fracture behaviours in the base metal are ductile down to -40 C. The weld metal is the region with least ductility. The fatigue crack growth in the threshold region can be described with the model from Ritchie. The crack growth curve can be characterized with the analytical model from Schwalbe. The cyclic stress-strain-curves of the butt weld depends on the static yield stress. The three regions show cyclic softening.
