The long-term behaviour of bituminized radioactive waste in the geologic disposal conditions of the Boom clay formation has been investigated. Accordingly, leach experiments have been performed on Eurobitum and simulated Cogema bitumen. The leachant solutions were representative for the composition of media that are potentially present in a geologic repository for bituminized radioactive waste. The leaching behaviour of bituminized radioactive waste has been studied as a function of pressure, temperature, leachant composition and composition of the bitumen matrix. This parametric approach allows description of the factors and processes influencing the behaviour of bituminized waste in site-specific geologic repository conditions.
