  • Welding of the steel S355J2G3 (Fe E 355) without pre-heating: Determination of measuring methods for the quick and reliable determination of diffusible hydrogen


In this project the possibility of improving the process of determining the diffusible hydrogen in welding material was examined.

From welding series carried out identically, systematic hydrogen determination procedures were used for investigation. They were based on practice oriented measuring methods used for higher hydrogen densities, the Mercury-Method, the extraction in a closed system up to 150 C and the heat extraction in an open system. In particular, the hydrogen effusion behaviour and the influence of different sizes of the specimen, and of the exposure temperature, on the determination of diffusible hydrogen have been investigated.

The Mercury-Method was found to be the safest method, yet it is not adequate for every user. Accordingly it should be used as a reference method, while the moderate extraction in the closed system at 150 C with a welding specimen of defined size is recommended as an acceptable and practicable alternative. ve.
