The objective of this research work has been the substitution of the calcium rocks and other industrial products, normally used as absorbents for retaining SO(2) in power station flue gases. Basic solid residues from stainless steelmaking were used, in order to minimize both the wastes from power and steel plants activities. This work has been carried out according to the following planning:

- Inventory of the seven solid wastes;
- Characterization tests of the residue samples have consisted of chemical composition determinations by means of conventional analytical methods, crystallographic determinations by X-ray diffraction and thermal behaviour by thermogravimetric method;
- Determination of the ability for retaining sulphur dioxide, at laboratory level, of the pure residues and several mixtures of them;
- Characterization of the new residues obtained after desulphurization step (ashes modified by calcium sulphate) by means of X-ray diffraction and infrared diffuse reflectance;
- Scaling-up of the desulphurization process and puzzuolanic tests of the sulphated residues. dues.
