The main objective of this research work was the development and testing of a high resolution in situ gamma spectrometer with a collimated field of sight and its comparisons with conventional methods (eg taking of samples and laboratory measurements, measuring with contamination monitors). The economical sensible minimum detection limits for important nuclides of the in situ method were determined and compared with the different national and international release criteria. Assessments improving the existing decontamination strategies in terms of reducing occupational doses or minimizing the volume of nuclear waste were performed with a view to being used for recommendations of optimized decontamination strategies. The effect of the measurements on radiological models and scenarios was determined.
