The object of this research project was to improve the structure of high-carbon hot-rolled wire rod through optimization of the process parameters. The work was divided into laboratory investigations of model steels, simulation calculations in relation to concentration equalization and production trials involving the manufacture of continuously cast billets and, from these, hot-rolled wire rod. Within the framework of the production investigations, a test methodology was developed for precise qualitative characterization of the hot-rolled wire rod used for the subsequent trials. Further process parameters such as casting speed, superheating temperature of the melt and various stirring variants were also investigated as part of the research project.
