The main objectives of the present research were twofold:

- To pursue the development of a sensor allowing a continuous measurement of the liquid steel temperature;
- To measure the thermal evolution of liquid steel during primary and secondary refining in order to optimize the different refining steps.

In the converter, a specific sensor has been developed. It is embedded in the refractory lining of the vessel and only its upper surface is in contact with the melt. The steel temperature is calculated by a mathematical model assessing the thermal profile inside the probe. Four industrial campaigns have been performed in a K-OBM converter at the Cockerill Sambre Marcinelle steelshop. hop.
