The measurement of steel temperature using a television camera has been tested in the laboratory and on production steelmaking. It was demonstrated that the system worked satisfactorily when measuring the temperature of a calibrated tungsten source. Operation of the system on the steelworks revealed various practical difficulties. One was the presence of fume in the atmosphere between the steel and the camera. A further problem encountered was the performance of the electronics of the camera/data capture system. It is believed that with some further development the method can be made to work satisfactorily for continuous measurement of temperature.
