This report details the work carried out during a three-year collaborative project to determine accurately strand surface temperatures in continuous casting by measurement and calculation. Strand surface temperature measurements made on British Steel casters have been used with data on spray heat transfer coefficients measured at Clausthal Technical University to improve mathematical models of strand solidification. A successful series of plant trials has measured strand surface temperatures using embedded thermocouples. Analysis of these measurements has improved knowledge of heat transfer to the rolls, sprays and surplus spray water. This work has been further enhanced by laboratory measurement of spray water distributions and spray heat transfer coefficients. This has resulted in considerable improvements to strand solidification modelling.
