Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Techniques developed for the cold rolling mill have been applied to hot rolled strips to detect surface defects of the product. This research chooses another approach consisting of inspecting the work rolls inside the strands to directly detect the origins of several defects (oxides, encrustations etc) in order to replace the rolls as soon as the defects appear. Equipment was developed to inspect the work rolls consisting of an inspecting box containing a television camera coupled to a lightning arrangement, another box mounted near to the stand and containing the stroboscopic light source, the light being conducted to the inspection head by means of optical fibres, and an electronic cabinet containing the image grabbing and processing equipments. This equipment, able to take pictures of the rolls even during rolling, produces images having such a resolution that the thermal cracks can easily be observed.
