During the continuous casting of steel slabs the performance of the mould powder affects the slab surface quality, especially the incidence of longitudinal crack. The performance of a mould powder can be assessed during casting by using instrumented moulds, such as the British Steel mould thermal monitoring (MTM) system. This collaborative project was aimed at the use of instrumented moulds to predict the occurrence of longitudinal crack and assess mould powder performance during casting. In addition, further objectives, with respect to an investigation into the phenomenon used for the basis of the crack predictive software and mould flux temperature measurement, were undertaken.
