It is widely agreed that the so-called low-temperature degradation of sinter is an important factor for disturbancies in blast furnace permeability. This view is based on many years of laboratory investigations and routine tests showing a clear disintegration of many sinters in weakly reducing atmosphere at about 500 C. This view is in contrast to recent findings on a nitrogen-quenched blast furnace, where a variety of sinter samples showed very little disintegration, at least for a normal uninterrupted burden descent. Hence it was concluded that the gas in a blast furnace, contrary to the laboratory test gas, contains compounds which decrease or stop the degradation of sinter. The objective of the present project was to verify the latter position, track down such degradation inhibitors, study and possibly quantify their findings for operational optimization.
