Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

This report is published in two parts, part one is in English and part two is in Italian. In recent years, the production of zinc and zinc-alloy coated steels has markedly increased. This is because users of steel sheets (automobile manufacturers, domestic appliance manufacturers and building contractors) are using these coated steels positively for the purpose of improving corrosion resistance. Part 1 of this report presents the study made by British Steel on the zinc-silica and zinc-alumina systems. It describes the difficulties and successes of the development work, from bench-scale developments through to larger scale preparation using an in-house designed electroplating simulator, and product evaluation of the prepared materials - chemical analysis, corrosion resistance, paintability, formability and weldability. Part 2 describes the work by the Centro Sviluppo Materiali on the development of two classes of metallic coatings: the zinc-manganese and the amorphous alloys for electrocoating of steels, particularly for the automotive and appliance industry.
