  • Evaluation of MgO content in LFV slags necessary to control H2, O2 and S levels and the influence of refractory wear in the final product, slag overflowing during the vacuum period and the castability in the continuous casting machine


The addition of MgO to slag could have different influences on several parameters and variables in the production of special steels in LFV. The content of H(2), S, O(2) and microinclusions in the final product (usually bars) could be influenced by MgO slag content. Steelmaking parameters such as: slag overflowing during vacuum period, wear of the working lining refractory and the castability in the billet continuous casting machine could also be influence by MgO addition to slag (mainly quantity). However the increase of MgO content in slag could modify the main properties of it (viscosity, reactivity, inclusions flotation capacity, basicity) and therefore change the secondary steelmaking process. During the development of this project a complete evaluation of MgO compounds (composition, granulometry and physical parameters) has been done. In the same way, objective methods to valorate castability in billet continuous casting machines have been designed. A new laser equipment to valorate refractory wear in the ladle has been installed and developed.
