The aim of this joint research project is to substantially improve the incompressibility of slag produced by a steel works through metallurgical means in order to fulfil the demand for high quality products in road construction (eg for asphalt layers or hydraulically bonded layers) as well as the water construction industries. In order to achieve this aim the disintegration mechanism of the slag during the cooling off period was ascertained under laboratory conditions to devise the necessary steps in treating the slag. During tests carried out in situ the treatment measures resulting from the laboratory tests were used for practical application. Preliminary tests were carried out to establish different conditioning requirements for slag which formed the basis for the construction of a testbase for sandblasting with oxygen. The resultant slags were then tested for their chemical, mineralogical, environmental and mechanical properties and characteristics.
