This report describes the background to the studies and the need for analytical methods to classify corn gluten feed under the correct Customs Tariff Heading. Building on previous studies, the microscopy of specific particles in corn gluten feeds was investigated. Several different types of specific particles were chosen and a semi-quantitative assessment made, using 7 different banding categories. A draft protocol was developed and this was subjected to a first interlaboratory study involving 5 laboratories within the European Union, using artificially prepared corn gluten feed samples. Following the experience gained, the protocol was revised, and a second interlaboratory study was carried out by the same laboratories, this time using normal commercial products of corn residue. A final protocol for the estimation of the amount of specific particles of corn by-products by a microscopical methods has been produced.
