  • Effect of stannous tin adsorption on the electrochemical behaviour of iron in anaerobic slightly acidic media: Application to the corrosion of tin plate


The objective of this research is to understand, from a metallurgical aspect, the inhibitory effect of stannous ions on the corrosion of tin plate. A good electrochemical model of tinplate corrosion must account for the effect of coating dissolution-associated stannous tin on corrosion mechanisms. In organic media, such as citric acid, the complexing of stannous tin decreases its activity in the electrolyte. Hence, the Nernst potential of tin grows cathodic relative to steel, which is then galvanically protected. However, the inhibitor effect of stannous ions on the corrosion of tinplate in rather due to the stannous tin-complex compound adsorption on the more reactive sites of the steel substrate than to tin reduction (cathodic protection).
