To increase the natural replenishment of groundwater, artificial recharge of groundwater has become increasingly important across Europe.

This volume summarizes the accomplishments of a European Commission funded project on “Artificial recharge of groundwater”. It includes 10 chapters giving an introduction to the concept of artificial recharge, a description of the field investigations, and the general conclusions on the various processes occurring during artificial recharge (i.e. clogging, transport and degradation of organic compounds, chemical reactions, micro-organisms and microbiology, and modelling). The results of the project provide a background for establishing guidelines for the design and operation of recharge facilities.
