The purpose of the project includes three major goals for ICP-MS analysis of steel and steel related materials, namely application to trace and ultra-trace element determinations, Round-Robin tests and creation of a guideline.

The research activities defined and described in this project had the purpose to produce new operational procedures for quantitative determination of trace and ultra-trace elements in low alloy steel, high alloy steel, deep drawing steel and scrap using ICP-MS.

Furthermore, several trace and ultra-trace elements were determined in two coating materials because of their toxicity to man, namely in a zinc layer of a zinc-electrogalvanized deep drawing steel sheet and in tin used as a coating material for cans.

A convincing confirmation or rejection of the applicability of an analytical method can be done by carrying out a Round-Robin test. Such a test was performed in this project for three steel related materials, and these were high alloy steel, zinc layer of zinc-electrogalvanized steel, and tin coating materials.

The ICP-MS technique was introduced in steel laboratories about ten years ago, but no outlines guide or handbook for ICP-MS analysis of steel exists, and consequently there is a great demand for such a guide containing practical advice.advice.
