In hot rolling of steel strips, flatness ranks alongside thickness, thickness profile, width and surface finish as one of the most important quality characteristics. Close flatness tolerances are not just a measure of the quality of the finished product but also a prerequisite for trouble-free further processing, especially given the growing use of automation in production operations.

Online measurement and control of flatness using open and closed loop control systems is this a central element in the effort to improve quality in the hot rolling process which has been the general aim of the project. With this general aim in mind, comprehensive investigation in the following fields have been performed:

-The development of closed loop control using interstand-tensiometer-loopers.
-The suitability of non-contact flatness measurement systems.
-The influences of downstream operations on strip flatness by model studies.
-The evolution of strip flatness downstream the finishing mill under operating conditions.

On the basis of these investigations an advanced control strategy for flatness has been proposed.roposed.
