Requirements of hot-strip mill customers are growing more important in terms of flatness and internal stresses. To improve the control of such parameters, the following research deals with a study of the phenomena which rule the internal stresses evolution after hot rolling, from exit of the finishing mill to the de-coiling of the cold strip.

The research was based on:

-Measurements, on a hot-strip mill, of the initial flatness defect and of the main factors which were likely to modify it.

-Experiments in a hot-strip mill, in order to make out the influence of product or process parameters.

-Measurements, in Thyssen Krupp Stahl Laboratory, of the internal stresses with two methods: high-speed hole drilling and Barkhausen noise, and with a parallel study of flatness and internal stresses.

-Characterization method for the internal stress conditions concerning the different steel qualities, depending on the measured principal stress values.

-Finite elements modelling of the stress state in a hot coiled strip.

This study revealed the influence of the different stages of the hot-strip mill line after hot rolling. hot rolling.
