The purpose of this study was to extend the potential for dosing molten Al-Si plating baths with metals such as Mn, Mg and Ti to produce new aluminium-plated steels (carbon and stainless steels) of low cost and with improved properties in terms of resistance to hot oxidation and humid corrosion for use in catalytic exhaust systems. This objective is related to the requirement for improved durability and resistance to high temperatures of exhaust system components.

The results obtained indicate that it is possible to improve the properties of conventional aluminium coatings on carbon steel for use in the construction of exhaust systems by dosing the conventional Al-Si 8% bath with Mn, Mg and Ti. The new dosed coatings may also be applied to stainless steels (AISI 409 and 430) and provide notable improvements compared to the un-plated steel, particularly with 409. Dosing conventional Al-Si 8% baths with Mg in the range 0.5-0.9% provides coatings for all the steel bases, with improved resistance to hot oxidation and corrosion.
