The objective is to demonstrate the practicability of a process for the manufacture of thin strips with a thickness of 50 to 100 mm from difficult to mould alloys such as Fe-Si and Fe-Cr-Al. Rod-shaped input stock is fed vertically into a melting facility at a controlled speed under inert gas and melted off. The melting facility consists of two coils. The melt off coil is located under the pre-heating coil. This coil arrangement enables the production of a stable melt off stream from a 50 mm diameter rod. The maximum feed speed is 10 mm/s. The melt stream is caught in a special high temperature tundish. The bath level in the jet is between 10 and 30 mm for a 3 mm wide jet gap. The melt continues to flow on through the jet slit onto the casting wheel. There a melt puddle forms between the jet floor and casting wheel surface. A thin layer is drawn out of the melt puddle. This results in a film with a thickness of up to 100 mm. Typical casting roller speeds lie in the range from 10 m/s to 15 m/s. It is suggested that the overheating of the melt is prevented by using a third coil to control this independently from the mass flow. No major obstacles were encountered when performing the task. The process that has been developed is suitable for producing foils with a thickness of 100 mm at casting speeds of 10 m/s.
