Report on Contract No. 7215-CA/204, 205, 206 - 1 July 1996 to 31 October 1998.

The aim of this project was to design, build and test novel cooling equipment based on recent research work, to be installed immediately behind the last stand of a hot strip mill to provide very fast and controllable cooling of the exiting strip. Optimised cooling patterns were defined for the differing steel grades and products rolled in a modern hot strip mill.

The industrial trials showed that the cooling efficiency decreases with the rolling speed and the amount of water applied on the strip in the cooling unit. By modifying the design of the cooling unit, the efficiency was improved by more than 30 per cent at high rolling speeds. At a laboratory scale, it was demonstrated that UFC is a powerful technology for the development of new high strength steel grades. es.
