Final report on Contract No. 7210-PR/011; 1 July 1997 to 31 December 2000

In the Bochum steel plant of Krupp Thyssen Nirosta (KTN) and in the Terni steel plant of Acciai Speciali Terni (AST), two AOD converters have been equipped with measurement devices for the exhaust gas flow rate and CO, CO(2), O(2) concentrations. Additional computers were installed on the plants for extending process observation and control. Measured and calculated values are displayed on a graphic screen at the converter control panel.

Betriebsforschungsinstitut (BFI) developed the process observation model and installed it in cooperation with KTN at their converter. By means of carbon, oxygen and energy balances, the rates of decarburisation and metal oxidation as well as the weight and the composition of steel and slag are calculated together with the temperature. On the basis of a process model for the final decarburisation period, it is discussed how the carbon balance accuracy can be improved and a dynamic blowing control strategy is proposed.

Centro Sviluppo Materiali (CSM) developed a mathematical model for the simulation of the AOD process, useful for offline AOD control actions definition, and consequently a model for the simulation of the same AOD process subjected to a dynamic control. The objective of this model was to evaluate the performance of an AOD process under dynamic control. The same model was then modified to be employed as an online tool for the dynamic optimisation of gas flow rate and lance position control. trol.
