Final report on Contract No. 7210-PR/008; 1 July 1996 to 30 June 1999

Betriebsforschungsinstitut (BFI) analysed fluctuation effects at a furnace with reactor and high voltages. A dynamic fluctuation control system was developed for a 135 t furnace with a 75 MVA / 800 V transformer. Graphical tools were developed to simplify the optimisation of furnace design and operation. For a 145 t furnace with a 20 MVA reactor and a 135 MVA / 1200 V transformer, operation was successfully improved.

IRSID improved the performance of the electrode regulators by an optimised tuning on the basis of an arc furnace simulator. With this tuning method, the arcs became more stable, with lower current and power fluctuation. Also an advanced meltdown control strategy was developed to optimise thermal efficiency by adapting the arcs to the state of melting. Good results were achieved in industrial tests.

Corus developed electrode regulation for flexible control of arc length and power which was successfully commissioned at an arc furnace. A level 2-control system was also designed and implemented. Sidenor made a detailed electrical study for the 85 MVA / 1050 V furnace to evaluate its performance and to investigate problems with arc stability at high voltage. Corus and Sidenor made electric arc furnace and ladle furnace trials to improve arc stability by addition of spent salt cake, a waste product containing Na and K. nd K.
