  • Improvement of the yield of strand and the regularity of sinter by control of charging conditions and monitoring of flame front propagation: Final report


Final report on Contract No 7210-PR/003; 1 July 1997 to 30 June 2000.

Owing to the need to produce sinter with optimum and consistent properties for a smooth and efficient blast furnace operation, a more accurate control of the sintering process is required so as to achieve high productivity, a stable operation and a high quality of sinter. The activities of this project have led to advances in the understanding of the sintering process which can be useful for the orientation of future research. The main results concern:
- The relationship between mix composition and all the parameters controlling productivity.
- The availability of the Irsid Flame Front model as a research tool describing sintering mechanisms, and predicting tendencies after a change of operating conditions.
- The determination of the most influential parameters at charging.
- The description of chemical reactions that take place during the sintering operation, a typical solid's thermal patterns along the bed height, and first relationships between operating conditions / thermal data / sinter properties.

There has been a development and/or assessment of new on-strand measurements which have to be used for the monitoring of flame front propagation along the height and width of the sinter strand. The main result is the availability of these new measurements both in terms of comparison with existing measurements, and in their sensitivity to voluntary modifications of operating conditions. itions.
