  • Pilot and demonstration plant for upgrading the iron oxide produced in HCL regeneration to a high grade industrial primary material. Final report


The by-product iron oxide produced in the recovery of acids in the regeneration plants of hydrochloric acid pickling yielded little profit when transferred to various branches of industry owing to its degree of impurity.

Therefore, as part of this project, a concept was developed which makes it possible using chemical precipitation reactions to reduce the impurity elements that prevent a higher grade use of the iron oxide, especially in the ferrite industry, to a total of 700 ppm. This concept was then checked and verified using various model and plant trials and put into practice by constructing a pilot plant. By means of a large number of optimisation stages with respect to the chemical and physical oxide quality produced, the pilot plant was optimised until it was capable of permanent industrial operation. The iron oxide produced in this way was processed by the user in parallel in ferrite production trials and the ferrite produced in this way was tested technologically. The defects that were detected in the oxide morphology were then fed back to the optimisation work on the pilot plant.

In this way it is now possible, with the help of the pilot plant, to produce an iron oxide which is not only high grade but also highly stable and highly pure in its technical properties with a quality standard of the highest worldwide. This oxide creates the prerequisite for a new generation of high-performance ferrites for European oxide users.
