The levelling process aims to even out length differences in the strip or plate. To straighten out residual curvature after uncoiling, a flattener is used. The strip is then transported to one or more levellers where errors of the type edge-waves and mid-waves are corrected. Within this project, mainly the roller levelling process and distortion after cutting of hot-rolled strips have been investigated.

Practical investigations of bending over a roll, trials in a pilot-plant leveller and industrial trials in a flattener have been performed. Extensive finite element calculations have been added to the practical trials and show good agreement for a simple bending. The pilot-plant trials have been evaluated using statistical methods showing good correlation for calculating total torque and residual bending.

Beam bending theory can be applied to predict the behaviour and the sensitivities of the process. Spreadsheet calculations of fraction thickness yielded for a range of work roll gaps provide a useful basis for systematic levelling machine set-up. Roller levelling processes should aim to subdue residual stresses by plastically stretching at least 60% of the thickness. Leveller engineering condition is the main factor contributing to distortion or cutting.

For the determination of strip shape distortions, a total of 149 hot strips with widths ranging from 600 mm to 1400 mm and thicknesses between 1.0 mm and 6.0 mm were scanned. The defects have been evaluated in detail. It is proposed to install a relatively cheap bending apparatus at the entry side of the processing lines.
