There is no "Part 1" report, but a report on an earlier phase of the project was published as EUR 18540 EN in 1998.

To avoid the disadvantages of roller straightener or gag presses, a new method for straightening steel sections was investigated.

Stretch straightening trials with three different types of sections - first short pieces of 1.2m and then of lengths between 6.0 and 11m - and made of different materials were also conducted in an industrial line.

As previously for the short test pieces, an initial test series including preliminary tensile testing served to determine the tensile strains to be used in this connection. Once again, all the test pieces were measured geometrically before and after the stretching. Short and long roller-straightened test pieces were also measured geometrically for comparison purposes. Additionally, residual stresses were measured with a contactless system.

On the whole, the results of the test show impressively that, based on stress-strain diagrams, it is possible to infer a material-specific tensile strain with which a good straightening effect and a predictable, uniform influence on the section width and thickness can be achieved. The tests and trials involving the different cross sections and materials demonstrate the suitability of the stretch straightening method for use with steel sections. Geometrically, it is possible to achieve results similar to those in roller straightening. The testing reveals tolerable changes in the technological properties.
