Final report on Contract No 7210-PR/022, 1 July 1997 to 31 December 2000.

The project was aimed at improving reheat furnace control by the feedback of process measurements available on a routine basis, such as rolling load and local temperature related to the steel grade and to other rolling conditions. Some feedback strategies have been addressed, considering strip, plate and long product hot rolling practices.

The possibility of smoothing temperature differences along and across a slab/bar/strip has been investigated, based on an independent control of the last two zones of a walking beam furnace and on a correct setting of the distance between slabs inside the furnace.

Rolling loads from the roughing mill have been used to define variability in product conditions, for improved temperature consistency at the furnace discharge of a plate mill; an advisory system is proposed for better control of furnace operation as a function of loading information and bringing together various models developed during the project.

The measurement of the bottom surface temperature after the plate mill permitted to improve the accuracy of the drop out temperature of the slabs from the furnace; the difference between the calculated and measured temperatures on the bottom surface of the plates are used to update the furnace control system.

Thermal evolution during the reheating - roughing process of long products have been studied and a relationship between surface quality and reheating - roughing parameters has been found. A model integrating both the reheating and roughing processes has been created to provide advice to operators.
