Final report on Contract No 7210-PR/066, 1 July 1997 to 31 December 2000.

The overall objective of this project was to develop an environmentally friendly pre-treatment for strip steel and coated strip steel as a suitable replacement for chromate containing pre-treatments. A two-step process consisting of treatment with a rare earth metal salt solution followed by treatment with an organosilane has been considered. Accelerated corrosion testing, electro chemical testing and surface analysis have been used to characterise the films formed on hot dipped galvanised steel after pre-treatment with the rare earth metal salt solution and to assess its expected corrosion resistance. Physical tests have been used to assess the coating adhesion. Similar investigations have been used to study a substrate treated only with organosilane and finally a substrate treated with a rare earth metal salt followed by an organosilane. A flood and squeegee pre-treatment rig has been constructed to study the deposition of novel pre-treatments under line conditions. A concurrent study has been made at Cardiff University to develop methods for computer modelling of organosilanes onto a crystalline iron surface.
