Final report on Contract no. 7215-CA/602, 1 July 1993 to 31 December 1996

This demonstration project confirms the suitability for the housing market of a steel construction concept using hot-rolled sections and a composite floor element made of hot-rolled sections with the lower flange cast in concrete.

The starting point of the project was to demonstrate the applicability for the housing market of the cold-formed all-steel ISB construction system, developed at Eindhoven Technical University.

The very fact of developing and building the project in the real market situation brought to light that the ISB system did not comply with the harsh reality of the market. However, from that same reality, valuable information was obtained that showed the way in which new solutions had to be researched.

Applying these solutions in the Kelpen Office building proved the great value of a demonstration project in many ways. At object level, the project shows that the construction concept appeals to the wishes of the end-user and the market, both in terms of quality and cost. At process level, the way the building was organised, the speed of erection and the ease of connection of all elements resulted in a short completion time. At a strategic level, it shows that a determined innovator, supported by government and industry, can make a start in the difficult but promising housing market. At an academic level, the project resulted in a lasting cooperation between Eindhoven Technical University and the Dutch industry.
