Scanning electrochemical techniques, such as the scanning vibrating electrode technique and the scanning Kelvin probe, have been used to study the mechanisms of degradation at the cut-edge as well as the function and efficiency of chromate and alternative chromate-free primers. In addition line-trials have been performed on a selection of chromium containing and chromium-free primers. Line-trial samples have been exposed to various laboratory exposures using electrochemical techniques and accelerated corrosion tests and natural weathering exposures. From the results a mechanism for the inhibition of chromate is proposed. The function and the efficiency of various chromium-free alternatives are discussed. The techniques used for the laboratory evaluation of chromium-free formulations are discussed in terms of their usefulness in the evaluation of the function and efficiency of chromium-free alternatives. Finally the results from two years' exposure at the marine site of Bohus Malmön (Sweden) and the tropical and marine site of Cayenne city (French Guyana) are given.
