Contemporary tests such as outdoor exposure focus on fully developed coatings whereas the Kelvin probe is applied only to the simplest coatings tested at constant exposure conditions. Obviously a huge gap exists between the two extreme cases, which this project aimed to bridge. One major aim was to further develop the SKP technique (scanning Kelvin probe). The suitability of the completely new SKP could be proven during the first experiments ever on active/passive transitions observed with in situ SKP.

These new results demonstrate impressively how little is known about the fundamental processes during active/passive transitions on complexly coated and pre-treated galvanised and galvannealed samples and show that the investment of more than five man-years of work spent at LKO for the development and construction of the new SKP were justified.

These results can only be interpreted in a way that the classical concepts of delamination are not applicable any more. Indeed, the in situ SKP experiments reveal a very peculiar behaviour. Already after the first wet/dry/wet cycle no clear cathodic or anodic behaviour is to be observed. The exact mechanisms are not yet fully understood. In parallel, fully developed technical coatings have been stripped down with respect to the complexity of the exposure conditions. Real outdoor exposure of all systems has been performed and compared to accelerated outdoor exposure tests, as well as climatic chamber accelerated tests.
