High-strength sheet steel structures manufactured with innovative forming technologies provide great potential for modern lightweight automotive bodies. Forming of the complex structures leads to specific thickness distribution in combination with strengthening effects. The designer requires reliable methods and data to fully exploit the potentials of the materials and technologies.

Within this project the influence of uni- and biaxial forming on the static and fatigue strength under constant and variable amplitude loading was determined for the high-strength sheet steels DP 500 and ZStE 180 BH on material specimens with reference of the mild steel DC 04. The results are presented as the stress-strain curves and the e-N curves as a function of the forming grade.

The structural behaviour in a complex structure was investigated on a newly developed generic component, a box beam with well-defined beads. Based on elastic plastic material simulations, experimental and numerical stress analysis and fatigue tests on the structures, a method for the fatigue life evaluation of complex formed automotive body structures based on material data from specimen testing and linear FEM-analysis was proposed and demonstrated on the generic component.
