Final report on Contract No 7210-PR/094, 1 July 1998 to 31 December 2001.

The project examined the microstructural and engineering parameters which influence the loaded roll gap profile, in order to help establish a ferritic rolling strategy from reheating to finishing.

A very good correspondence between measured and calculated thermal evolution was achieved by the roughing model. During industrial validation, an overestimation of rolling forces was observed for the first roughing passes. It is thought that this problem is caused by the link between the torque and the force.

In relation to the finishing model simulations, the influence of temperature, pass reduction and rolling speed on the rolling force in the last stands of a hot strip mill finishing train was investigated with the aid of two-dimensional FEM analysis. Three-dimensional FEM analysis was used to study the material flow and flatness.

The Orowan model for predicting rolling forces and torques has been converted into a PC program. FE modelling has shown that 2-D FE modelling can provide accurate roll flattening data in comparison with 3-D techniques, but requires only a fraction of the CPU time of the 3-D case, whereas 2-D roll bending models produce predictions of roll bending which are in qualitative but not quantitative agreement with the more computer-intensive 3-D models.

The investigation of material behaviour concerns the transformation temperatures and flow curves of three different steels: an IF(Ti) steel, an ELC steel and an LC steel. In addition to this work, the softening behaviour was investigated, which revealed an important role of recovery.
