Final report on Contract No 7215-PP/021, 1 July 1998 to 30 June 2001.

In order to control the evolution of the work roll surface degradation, an online inspection system for automatic full-width work roll observation has been developed, including an integrated image analysing system. The inspection system has been based on a prototype GCD camera system developed in a previous ESCS project. (72010 - GB/206 (92 - E1.03)).

Several improvements have been made to the inspection head to assure functionality and to enable automatic tuning of the image. In order to observe the whole work roll surface, a translation system has been developed scanning the work roll width. This system also includes a rotation unit to adapt the perpendicular position of the inspection head. The scanning of the work roll surface is controlled by a newly developed user interface. The acquired images are transferred to a second PC to be automatically analysed by a newly developed image analysis program. Finally, an operator interface has been developed which enables the online monitoring of the roll surface evolution and the offline analysis.

The system is used to define objective criteria for roll changes in order to anticipate strip surface defects caused by work roll surface degradation. Together with the rolling data, it also leads to a better understanding of the parameters influencing the work roll surface degradation. This new system is installed at the hot strip mill of Sidmar.
