Final report on Contract No 7210-PR/107, 1 July 1998 to 30 September 2001.

The fatigue behaviour of a large number of steel grades has been tested. The effect of coating, grade type, processing condition, testing conditions and pre-strain (10%) has been assessed. In addition, fractography was carried out to evaluate the mode of fracture on various samples. A detailed microstructural investigation was performed on thin foils in the electron microscope. During the fractography investigations, different stress concentration factors were used to allow a study of the crack initiation behaviour.

All grades investigated have shown similar fatigue performance. Nevertheless, the different grades show a considerably different fracture appearance. Therefore the intergranular fracture observed for IF grades, does not worsen the fatigue performance.
