Final report on Contract No 7210-PR/054, 1 July 1997 to 30 June 2001.

This project has addressed the lack of understanding of the formability of LWTBs both practically and numerically. The primary objective of this investigation was to develop and define a set of guidelines to aid OEMs and tool manufacturers in the design and production of tooling for LWTB components.

The report summarises the main accomplishments of the whole project. The optimisation of the sample test-pan FEA model has been carried out for all material combinations and all weld positions. A rationalisation approach has been taken by using a selection of the best and worst cases from the simple test-pan FEA simulations to continue the work. Further work has been carried out to assess the performance of various positioned laser welds in more complex shapes in terms of how they interact with the geometrical features that have been introduced. Different models have been used and assessed in terms of their ease of use against the value of the results that they produce.
