Final report on Contract No 7210-PR/063, 1 July 1997 to 31 December 2000.

The first aim of the project was to develop a low-cure thin-film weldable organic coating on a chromate-free pre-treatment which is also suitable for coating BH-grade steels. It was shown that the coating significantly improves the corrosion resistance of metallic coated steel in flanged joints in order to make the secondary corrosion protection measures carried out by automotive producers obsolete (thus the name: pre-sealed). It is weldable, can be adhesively bonded and formed according to the specifications of the automotive industry with good results. Further improvements are needed: the chromate-free pre-treatment used must be optimised in relation to adhesion in deep drawing with subsequent alkaline cleaning. It became evident that the conductive iron phosphide pigments for welding are very hard and due to their high grain-size can lead to abrasion of press tools. Further work in this area is concentrating on lowering the grain size, adding another conductive component as compensation for welding and also adding dry lubricants to the coating.

The second target was to develop a non-weldable coil coating system on a chromate-free pre-treatment with the potential to substitute the first paint layers of the automotive producer (electro-deposition paint and primer surfacer). It was shown that the two-layered coating that was developed could meet the necessary requirements of corrosion resistance, formability (even not oiled), appearance and over-coating properties. Adhesive bonding and clinching were also evaluated in an exemplary manner.
